interaction design

… from Interaction08 in Savannah (btw, I am getting more and more dismayed that I wasn’t able to go this year) about how the discipline has evolved from the earlier, more waterfall-like, approach to product development that seem to permeate the industry.

I particularly like the way he breaks down why we need sensibilities that cross over different disciplines and how, in fact, its that connective tissue that can lead to truly profound work.

If you missed the conference and want a great walkthrough, check out Whitney Hess’ excellent recaps (and links to the presentations):

Interaction08 Day 1
Interaction08 Day 2
In the latter, she highlights some excellent Bill Buxton quotes, two of which feel particularly sharp:

“If you don’t know what value you bring to the organization, you don’t bring any.”
and
“Design isn’t invention, innovation, or creativity. Design is a compromise.”

Gabby Hon’s post “Less Talking, More Doing” (sure to get some fired up) brilliantly captures the experience of dipping one’s toes in the IxDA mailing list (as well as many other similar lists I’ve tried over the years).

Interaction Designers/Information Architects/Whatever we’re calling them today have always displayed a strong propensity for pontificating about the different aspects of what we/they do – so much so that one might wonder how they have time to actually DO anything.

Let’s all heed Gabby’s call and get back to doing what got us here in the first place: designing.

Less Talking, More Doing at Experience Matters

Considering some people are still trying to sort this out, I think Challis Hodge’s take on it from way back in 2001 was pretty forward-looking.
