Just signed up. Interested to see how the Times handles this collaborative relationship. More and more brands are setting up these platforms for dialogue but I’m most interested in this one because of the extreme state of flux the industry is in. There’s a great opportunity here. Let’s hope they can leverage it.
Before Apple introduced the iPhone… « counternotions Very smart response to the recent "Apple is Evil" backlash. The most powerful is the list of what things were like (and what we as consumers accepted) pre-iPhone.
Are Gamers More Evolutionarily Advanced? | TechWatch | Fast Company I've always fallen firmly in the camp that gaming teaches and hones very valuable problem-solving skills. This piece does a nice job exploring how it may all be rooted in a brain mechanism that rewards "discovery". Good stuff.
You’d be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive, relevant and informative presentation on relevant consumer tech now and looking forward than what Jeremy Johnson has squeezed into these 201 slides. Definitely worth a flip for your own edification and a bookmark for later inspiration.
inessential.com: Anatomy of a feature This piece does an excellent job highlighting the implications of every choice made when you’re entertaining a (small) new feature and I thought the narrative style in which it’s told would be relevant to everyone in the field of product development.
Dear American Airlines | Dustin Curtis This story is a few months old and if you haven't read it yet, you definitely should. Designer Dustin Curtis writes a letter to American Airlines and offers them a redesign of their homepage to boot. Be sure to check out the work and the response from AA.
Personas is an interesting installation from some folks at MIT that takes your first and last name and then uses your online presence to develop a high level persona for you. You can see mine above.
Here’s their description of how it works:
In a world where fortunes are sought through data-mining vast information repositories, the computer is our indispensable but far from infallible assistant. Personas demonstrates the computer’s uncanny insights and its inadvertent errors, such as the mischaracterizations caused by the inability to separate data from multiple owners of the same name. It is meant for the viewer to reflect on our current and future world, where digital histories are as important if not more important than oral histories, and computational methods of condensing our digital traces are opaque and socially ignorant.
I need to play around with this more but on the surface, it seems pretty neat. It practically loses all value if you don’t have a unique name (by Google’s standards).
I’ve loved this packaging from Help Remedies since the first time I saw them. Not only are they great to look at but in a world where Duane Reade aisles have become a cacophony of products serving redundant needs, these containers manage to be refreshingly simple while still being very informative.
graphpaper.com – Social Media Charm School While I'm actually unable to talk about "social media experts" at all without my skeptic's hat on, this is a great piece from @chrisfahey on evaluating them.
Stats Confirm It: Teens Don’t Tweet Feels new to have tech. that neither my mom nor the teens at 7-11 are really into. Shows how "of the moment" Twitter is.
Looklet Interesting fashion site that provides a tool to let users build and modify looks. (via @superkb)
Seven (More) Reasons to Ditch Your iPhone | TechWatch | Fast Company While this list isn't necessarily wrong, the only reasons that I think will resonate with most people are about how the phones look/work and how expensive they are. For the former, I think we need to wait until we start to see these slick Android interfaces on devices in people's hands. And while T-Mobile might be cheaper, I'm not convinced it's better.
