+ Reading AppleTV patents: widgets and DVR functionality

A couple of AppleTV-related patents have recently been unearthed and while I wasn’t immediately grabbed by the product, the direction it could head in is very exciting. Also, I know that trying to read Apple’s intentions from their patents can often be a fool’s game but a boy can still dream, right?

First off there was talk about enabling widgets on the TV, which, if executed properly could be pretty compelling. Assuming you’re digesting your cable feed through a future version of AppleTV, its easy to picture a one click, Dashboard-like overlay approach to getting snippets of information within the context of what you’re watching.

The second patent (which is relatively old) suggested Apple may be interested in entering the DVR space. The interesting angle is that they would naturally be putting more focus on mobilizing that recorded content via iPods, etc. While to me that sounds extremely compelling (the hacks to get content from my TiVo to my iPod are a little too much for regular usage), I can’t help but wonder if they would really go down this path now that they’re so entrenched in the TV download space.
