+ Design In The Wild: Cancun airport - good for maps, bad for books

02.24.08 | Permalink |

On our way back from Tulum, Karen and I got delayed at the Cancun airport for about four and a half hours. This resulted in having the “opportunity” to eat our first ever meal at Bubba Gump’s, as well as learn the layout of the airport backwards and forwards.

After some time wandering around trying to come to terms with the fact that there is NO PLACE TO BUY BOOKS ANYWHERE IN THE AIRPORT (for reals!), we stumbled across this interactive map kiosk, inviting me to “Toque la pantalla.” Touch I did and found the experience to be easy to grasp and the information really helpful (sadly, not even this device was able to locate a book vendor). Once you pick what shop you want to get to, the view changes to a virtual walk through the airport, with low-end Second Life style graphics. Here are a couple shots of the interface:

Get directions (and a virtual walkthrough) to where you want to go

Bonus: While dining at Gump’s I took note of their method of getting attention from the waitstaff - if you need something, you flip a license plate that says “Stop, Forrest Stop.” If you’re all set, you guessed it, you flip it to… sigh. I don’t even have the energy.

This is how you alert your waiter you need something. Red = Help, Blu = er... keep running Forrest.
