Design in the Wild photos kickoff: Can your Brand be No Brand?

Now that I’ve gotten almost caught up with everything, I’m going to start addressing the photo portion of this site a bit more. To recap, my hope is to find examples of good/bad design, products, signage, etc. in the wild and post them here. Some will have more commentary than others and some will probably have none. Anyway, onward we go…

TOAD: Dec. 20th, 2007 - Can your brand be no brand?

This is the storefront for a local cobbler on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. I noticed while passing that there is no discernible name to be found anywhere. It made me wonder about all the ways people must talk about/recommend this place to friends, etc.

Conventional branding wisdom would suggest its a crazy approach but I think you can also make the case that the mom and pop sensibility (I’m guessing a lot of people call it simply “Joe’s”) and neighborhood familiarity (“That place next to…”) could carry this kind of business quite well.
