This fire extinguisher design, by Woo Seok Park, is just stunning. Truth be told, I’m a huge sucker for this Bjorkian design aesthetic. I like this so much I wish I could give it a permanent place on this homepage.
Here’s how it works:
To reduce the required handling of the fire extinguisher, the user needs only pull down the cover from the extinguisher’s base, and a powder capsule will emerge from an opening. The user rolls or throws the capsule towards the fire. The capsule, made of a material that reacts to high temperatures, will explode when it reaches the fire. Thus, the user does not need to get close to the fire in order to put it out. The elasticized body of the capsule enables it to absorb shock when it is thrown.
Roll to Put a Fire Out » Yanko Design (Thanks, Eduardo!)

there are a few things i really love about this. first off, the oxygen feed is great. i would hope that there’s some sort of feedback to indicate when the oxygen is getting low aside from the dial, though i suppose in a fire i would be pretty obsessive about checking the dial. I also love being able to put out the fire from afar.
one thing i would be concerned about is that it’s a little harder to throw a ball than point a large cone. so what happens if you waste a few balls missing the fire? or you get so amped up that you hurl all the balls out windows and then don’t have any left for your escape? also, for small fires, what sort of explosion range do the balls have?
